A key risk of this protocol is a possible pollution of the auction set with inactive or malicious validators. Frankly, we see the risk of malicious activity as small, but believe inactive validators could greatly reduce protocol efficiency.
For that reason, Byzantine uses the concept of node operator reputation to align node operator incentives with what we consider productive activity.
Inactivity decreases node operator reputation and productive activity increases it.
The formula for node operator reputation is not final yet, but it depends on these factors:
Positive
Average availability
Time spent on the protocol
Time spent validating via the protocol
Negative
Number of disconnects
